Before You Hit the Road

A safe motorcycle ride starts with proper preparation.

  • Take care of your body. Hunger, dehydration, and fatigue can impair focus and increase the chances of an accident. Before you hit the road, make sure you are well-rested and alert.
  • Check the weather. Wear waterproof outerwear if there's a chance of rain, layers if the temperatures are low, and stay home if there's extreme weather predicted.
  • Inspect the motorcycle. Do a pre-ride inspection of the brakes, tires, and other parts. Make sure your motorcycle is ready for a safe ride.
  • Wear safety gear. Wear a helmet, eye protection, and other essential safety gear for every motorcycle ride.

Look for Hazards

A key part of safe motorcycle riding is continually scanning for hazards. Keep your gaze at least 20 feet ahead, which will give you enough time to spot an obstacle and adjust accordingly. Stay on the lookout for common hazards, such as discarded nails, potholes, and wildlife jumping onto the road. If you see a suspicious spot, assume it is slick. It could be something that causes a traction issue, such as spilt oil.

Interact with Other Motorists Safely

Odds are, you won't be the only person on the road. Use defensive riding tactics to keep yourself, and others around you, as safe as possible.

  • Assume drivers don't see you. Many drivers on the road are distracted, from texting while driving to driving while drowsy. It's safest to assume that they don't notice you and to exercise extreme caution when changing lanes or turning.
  • Look out for cars running red lights. It's unfortunate, but many cars do run red lights. Each time you approach an intersection, do so with caution.
  • Don't engage with rude drivers. Road rage can quickly snowball into a dangerous confrontation - and the motorcycle rider is at a severe downside in that situation.

Know Your Limits

Build your motorcycle ride to match your experience level and skill set. In other words, a new rider shouldn't tackle an exceptionally challenging route! Biting off more than you can chew can lead to a stressful ride and involves taking unnecessary safety risks.
